A new era for the Porsche 911. Starting in 1973, it had a good run till 1989.
During this time, there are various models of the 911 produced:
911S
Carrera
SC (Super Carrera)
911 Turbo
Like the previous models, the G-series models were offered in the coupes and Targa models.
Who’s Carrera?
The 911 Carrera was a prominent model within the G-series. From 1974-76, it was built with a 2.7 liter engine that produced 173 hp. The car had the option of a “ducktail” rear wing in 1974.
This car model was based on the 911 1973 Carrera RS which was made for racing. The body and build of the car was heavily referenced from the RS.
Essentially, it was a civilized version of the race car.
Check out how it drives.
More of Carrera. The Carrera 3.0:
Later on in 1976, the 2.7 liter engine Carrera was switched to the Carrera 3.0. As the name implies, this model is powered by a 3.0 liter 6 cylinder engine with a top speed of 143 mph making 197hp.
The Carrera 3.0 is strong, reliable, and safe. It is capable of quick steering, with improved stability, and the technology for comfort and safety. It was well designed and would stand to be the “textbook” example to inspire the future 911 models.
The interior was all leather, from the seats to the steering wheel. The car had tech too, headlight washers to electric powered windows. Definitely a luxury to have in the 70s.
See for yourself here.
What more can one ask for? A beautiful design, reliable car that brings comfort. That is heaven in a car. Oh but there could be more?
Yes.
The Super Carrera:
This is where the 911 SC arrives. The Super Carrera. From 1978- 1983, this model took over the Carrera models. With the same engine as the Carrera 3.0, it had more torque than before making it a funner car to drive.
Additionally, there were more add ons to the car. A customer could opt for a rear spoiler known as the “whale tail,” bigger wheels, sport seats, and more.
Here’s an example of the whale tail and car in action. PORSCHE 911 SC Super Carrera 3.0 1982 - Test drive in top gear - G Model Engine sound | SCC TV
What do you think of the whale tail? Goofy? Cool? Would you get this option if you had this car? Feel free to share your thoughts below.
Over the years, Porsche has made small improvements to each model that would come out to increase the max car speed. The objective for Porsche was to make the car perform better and provide the driver with a better experience.

If the SC doesn’t satiate one's hunger for more in a car, then the 911 930 Turbo can.
Tu.. tu.. Turbo?
Yes. The 911 930 Turbo.
Manufactured between 1975-1977, the 930 Turbo is a 3.0 liter turbocharged 6 cylinder engine that made 260 hp with a max speed of 155 mph.
This car stood out within the 911 family. With its wide body chassis paired with the “tea tray” spoiler, this would beat any car on the road or on track. Porsche created an absolute powerhouse as it was capable of competing against luxurious race cars made by Lamborghini and Ferrari.
This meant that owning this car one had the best of the best in the automotive industry. The car was fixed with everything bigger. From breaks, to wheels, suspension, and tires. This made performance better. This also meant the car looked beefier expressing a more aggressive look than any other 911 models.
Not only did the car perform better, the interior was better as well. This car came in all leather with bucket seats in the front and leather seats in the back. This means luxury.
To have speed, comfort, luxury, and design in one car is an incredible accomplishment.
Porsche has done it once again. This goes to show how great the 911 can be. To have incredible performance and various iterations of the car to all look good time after time highlights the durability and relevance it has to the automotive industry.
It is art and engineering combined into one. Truly sensational.
Just a brilliant car loved by everyone. From adults to even kids.
